Eat delicious food, live longer…sounds pretty good, right?
So what’s the catch? What’s the secret to their “recipe?” Attempts to explain this phenomenon have generated plenty of reasonable theories not to mention dozens of scientific studies. But who really wants to plow through all of that bland, unsavory data? In any case, the real key has more to do with philosophy than physiology. Let’s just have a taste and decide for ourselves…
In this book, our goal will be to rediscover the joy of food from the beginning of a meal to the end—from selecting the freshest ingredients to the after dinner conversation, and everything in between. We will explore food traditions and their role in Italian culture. We will eat well and the health benefits will come as a consequence and not as a result of our obsessive efforts to that end. Sure, we’ll try to figure out “why,” but we won’t put too much effort in that direction. To do so would only spoil the poetry. Rather, we will focus on the ways to maximize the pleasure and minimize the guilt. After all, worry and guilt are far worse for your health than all the salt and cholesterol in a fast food “happy” meal.
More specifically, we will
- Discover some of the best regional cuisines in Italy.
- Learn a few simple techniques for cooking delicious dishes.
- Survey the history of some Italian food traditions.
- Debunk the pseudo-science behind the latest fad diets.
- Celebrate the subtle pleasure of sitting down to a slow meal with friends and family.
Finally, in the last chapter, we’ll chop it all down into bite size pieces for easy digestion. These “Italian Food Rules” that I've come up with are my semi-serious attempt to decode Italian food culture for the English speaking world.
Sound appetizing? Well then let’s journey together to that Bel Paese where life is sweet and the joy of everyday food is nothing short of miraculous.

Found this book a fun read as well as informative. Had just returned from my first trip to Italy and it was interesting to see the differences and similarities between the food there vs my Italian-American upbringing. Must be in my genes as I discovered that many of my eating preferences agree with that described in the book. I wish it was available in print so that I can give it to my relatives that do not read ebooks as a gift.Product details

Learned so many little known cooking habits of the native Italian. Their cooking is not what Americans sometimes considered Italian meals. Take meatballs for example - you will not find them in a restaurant in Italy. As a matter of fact Italians eat very little meat. Italians eat in courses - Primo (first plate) Secondo (second plate) and they don't mix all of their dinner items on the same plate.
Fun read with a lot of information in a small book. The author covered the customs in Italy and the different eating habits in the different parts of Italy. This was not a rehash of the Mediterranean or Paleo fads, but a common sense way of eating. Also covered were the differences between Italian food and American-Italian food.
Good read and should be read by anyone travelling to Italy for the first time. I realized some of what Rick reveals in this book during my trip to Italy a few years ago. If you eat like an Italian while on vacation, and living like an Italian, you will have a good chance of losing a few pounds while on vacation!
"Make love with the flavor" This is a quote taken from the book that describes how Italians view food. Italians' primary values center around the four Fs--family, friends, fashion and...food. In this continuation of the (blank) Like an Italian series, Rick takes us on a culinary journey that informs us, even as we laugh out loud at the differences between Americans and Italians. Frankly, while the other books in the series are probably geared towards ex-pats and tourists, this book has something for everyone, whether you've been to Italy or never set foot out of Castine, ME. For Americans in America, you learn how to eat "like" an Italian because you just cannot faithfully recreate Italian food in America but you can eat by the same principles. For Americans living in or visiting Italy, you get a sense of how regional cuisines differ and what to look for in specific regions. Good to know well before you arrive. After having lived in Italy for eight months, I can say that Rick's perspective is dead-on and that Americans have been so acculturized to the fast-food, artificial flavor, free delivery lifestyle, that Italian ways seem archaic. But seeing the slender eighty year old women walking to the store or the fit seventy year old men riding bicycles gives one pause to consider the merits of the Italian lifestyle. Maybe a three hour meal isn't such a bad idea... Plus, you really can't beat the taste of fresh food, once you know what food is supposed to taste like. Overall, great read and this will probably be the first of many times I read this book while here in Italy. Ciao!
What a great little Ebook. Humorous but serious, Italians are very serious about their food! Great information is given on what to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner and in between. How to order and what to order is a "must" if you ever go to Italy so you don't get kicked out of the country! Just kidding of course. Real Italian cooking is not the same as what we think here in America. It is fresher and lighter so you don't need to go on terrible diets constantly. The author makes you realize what junk we eat here and no wonder we are overweight and sick. It inspires you to throw out all the junk and dried herbs you've had in the shelf for 10 years. Great information and a good read. Smaller portions and lighter dishes are the way to go. You can also give the cookbook "Fast & Fit" by Teresa Giudice a look-see, which is along the same line of thinking which I previously purchased before seeing this Ebook.
At first I thought this was a cookbook, but instead I quickly found that it contains a great deal of information about how REAL Italians eat. And of course, it helps the reader understand why Italians are so healthy. Not only do they eat smaller portions than we do, but they worry less about dieting. Italians also enjoy the social aspects of eating more than we do. In this country, we eat and run. In Italy, a meal is an event to be shared and enjoyed. (They also walk a lot more than Americans do.)This book explores all the customs that surround Italian food customs. An excellent resource, well written, and well edited.
I've been to Italy 3 times now & wish I could have read his book before my first trip in 2000 - but then he hadn't even written it! This was full of useful & fascinating information. I'm currently reading a 3rd book of Rick's (Talk Like An Italian) & am always enthralled by his first-hand information from being so privileged to LIVE in this most beautiful country - and to be married to one its precious people! I appreciate Rick's honest evaluations and willingness to share what he's learned. If Rick can think of other subjects to write about Italian life I will continue to be a devoted fan. Although I can't live the Italian life now - I can pretend by reading & keeping my mind & heart there vicariously thru Rick's books!
